Eston is a town within the borough of Redcar and Cleveland and the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire.

The town of Eston lies at the foot of Eston Hills, a ridge 150-200 m above sea level, and a part of the Cleveland Hills. The land around Eston has been occupied since 2400BC, but it was the discovery of ironstone in Eston Hills in 1850 that saw Eston develop from two cottages to a thriving mining town.

The Eston urban district, which includes Grangetown, Southbank, Teesville, Normanby and Ormesby, is considered a town in its own right and has a strong sense of pride and community within its own district. Eston is now part of the Redcar and Cleveland borough but was part of the now defunct Parliamentary borough (pre 1968) of Middlesbrough although it does not lie within that borough today. It is still considered part of Middlesbrough by many residents most of whom still have a strong sense of identity within Eston separate to either borough. It was only made part of the district of Langbaurgh-on-Tees (Redcar & Cleveland) in 1974 when the county of Cleveland was formed. It has a population of approximately 7,500 residents within the town of Eston but around 37,000 in the district.
