European Portuguese

Encyclopedia : E : EU : EUR : European Portuguese

European Portuguese, also known as Continental Portuguese, is a group of Portuguese dialects spoken in Portugal. Because of different regional dialects, Portuguese government officials established standard Portuguese, which is based on Estremenho dialect spoken in Coimbra and Lisbon and agreed that schools must teach. Being a standard form, it must be taught to schools in Angola, Mozambique, Guinea Bissau, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, East Timor, and Macau, although there is a very wide variety of regional dialects.

Brazilian Portuguese, while being distinct in vocabulary, spelling and pronunciation from the European form of the language, remains intelligible to speakers of European Portuguese, in much the same way as American English is comprehensible to speakers of British or Commonwealth English.
