Eusebius Mandyczewski

Eusebius Mandyczewski, musicologist and composer, was born in Czernowitz, Ukraine on 18 August 1857, the son of a Greek Orthodox priest. He studied with Gustav Nottebohm and Robert Fuchs at the Vienna Conservatory, and became conductor of the Vienna Singakademie and from 1887 archivist of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde. From 1879 he was a close friend of Brahms and a prominent member of the 'Brahms circle', who aided Brahms in teaching Gustav Jenner. From 1897 he taught at the Vienna Conservatory as Professor of music history and musical instruments. He was made a Privy Councillor in 1916.

Mandyczewski was known as a man of considerable scholarship and learning, though he published relatively little. He edited the complete edition of Schubert's works, began a complete edition of Haydn's and, together with his pupil Hans Gál, edited Brahms's complete works. He died in 1929 in Vienna.
