Evelyn Lau (born 2 July 1971) is a Canadian poet and novelist. She was born in Vancouver, British Columbia to Chinese-Canadian parents. Her parents had high expectations of her, hoping she would become a doctor. Her family life was unhappy, however, as was her school life. In 1984, at age 14, she left home and began living on the streets of Vancouver, eventually turning to prostitution and drugs. Always wanting to be a writer she kept a diary which was published as Runaway: Diary of a Street Kid in 1989. The graphic book was a critical and commercial success. Her subsequent volumes of poetry and her first novel confirmed her as one of Canada's great young literary talents. She had a well publicized romance with the older writer W. P. Kinsella, a relationship that ended up with him suing her for libel. She currently lives in Vancouver.
