Evelyn Ntoko

Evelyn Ntoko (1922–April 30, 2004), born Evelyn Ntoko Mase, was a nurse and the first wife of Nelson Mandela, former South African president (from May 1994–June 1999) and African National Congress leader. They divorced in 1957 after 13 years of marriage (1944–1957).
Evelyn Ntoko and Nelson Mandela had four children: two sons, Madiba (Thembi) and Makgatho, and two daughters, both named Makaziwe. Their first daughter died aged nine months, and they named their second daughter in her honor. Makaziwe is now a nurse; Thembi was killed in a car accident in 1969 and Makgatho died of AIDS in 2005.
She died April 30, 2004 of respiratory failure in Johannesburg, South Africa.
