Evening Primrose was a television musical written in 1966 by Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman for ABC Television's Stage 67. It was based on a short story by John Collier about a poet (Anthony Perkins) who takes refuge from the world by hiding out in a department store after it closes. Once there he finds an entire community of night people who live in the store -most notably a beautiful young girl named Ella (Charmian Carr). Unfortunately for the two young lovers, their relationship is forbidden by the leader of the group, and escape seems like their only option. The ending provides a Twilight Zone-like twist.

Complete musical score: If You Can Find Me I'm Here; Charles Meets Mrs. Monday (instrumental); Charles And Ella (instrumental); Check List (instrumental); The Basement (instrumental); I Remember; I Remember Underscore; When; Sums/When Reprise; Take Me To The World; The Ball (instrumental); Roscoe And The Guard (instrumental); The Ball (Part 2) (instrumental); Escape (instrumental); Take Me To The World (Reprise); Final Credits (instrumental).

The original soundtrack recording was never commercially released, but composer Stephen Sondheim did order a privately-pressed LP which he gave to friends and cast members. Several songs from the score have been recorded commercially, but were not released together until Nonesuch Records issued a joint recording of Evening Primrose and The Frogs starring Neil Patrick Harris and Theresa McCarthy in 2001.

In 2005, the first stage representation of this musical was performed as part of the 'Lost Musicals' series, directed by Ian Marshall Fisher and starring, amongst others, Betsy Blair, Michael Matus, Jennifer Higham, Sylvia Seymour and Andrew Beavis.
