Executive One
Encyclopedia : E : EX : EXE : Executive One
Executive One is the call sign designated any civilian aircraft when the President of the United States is onboard. Typically, the President flies in military aircraft that are under the command of the Presidential Airlift Group, part of Air Mobility Command's 89th Airlift Wing, based at Andrews Air Force Base in Suitland, Maryland. The US President is unlikely to ever fly in civilian aircraft unless in the most extreme cases of national crisis, if even then. The only other possibly likely scenario would involve the President's personal wishes.
There has been one example of an active President flying a civilian aircraft: during the oil crisis of the 1970s, Richard Nixon flew on a standard commercial flight as a normal passenger. This flight did not carry the "Executive One" callsign, using its normal airline callsign instead.[[Citing sources citation needed]] His return flight was on a government aircraft, as per the norm.[[Citing sources citation needed]]
Any civilian aircraft carrying the Vice President would be designated Executive Two.
