Exfoliation (cosmetology)

Encyclopedia : E : EX : EXF : Exfoliation (cosmetology)

Exfoliation in cosmetology is a cosmetic technique aimed at removing dead skin cells from the face and body. Removing excess dead skin cells is reasoned to reveal younger and healthier looking skin underneath.

Exfoliation can be achieved through mechanical methods such as micro-bead face scrubs to abrasive cloths and also by chemical methods. Salicylic (BHA) and Glycolic acid (AHA) can be applied as chemical peels by a physician or dermatologist to aid rejuvenation of the skin and other conditions such as acne. Both acids can also be found in lower concentrations in over the counter products.

Every day usage of the term commonly implies the day to day routine of skin care. The cosmetic procedures Dermabrasion and Microdermabrasion are both extreme cases of exfoliation where the surface layer of skin is removed by sanding.
