Extreme Gear
Encyclopedia : E : EX : EXT : Extreme Gear
Extreme Gear is a fictional mode of transportation introduced in the game Sonic Riders. Extreme Gear is air-powered and is used for races. The origin of Extreme Gear is traced back to the origins of the Babylon Rogues, a group of thieves that used to live on the floating island of Babylon Garden, where they stole things using ancient Extreme Gear. Being a race of birds, the Babylons created the technology in order to save them the chore of flying under their own power. There are three different types of Extreme Gear:
Board-Type
Board-type gear is the most common. It is shaped similar to a skateboard or snowboard and is the default type of gear for all but two characters in the game. Its design comes from some form of board being used in a Sonic game since Sonic the Hedgehog 3.Skate-Type
Skate-type gear are basically air-powered shoes or rollerblades. Shadow's default gear is a pair of skates called "Darkness".Bike-Type
Bike-type gear are shaped like mopeds or other bike-type vehicles. These usually have more abilities than the other types, for good or for bad. Eggman can only use Bike-type gear. E-10000G, E-10000R and Ulala are the only characters in Sonic Riders that cannot use bikes.
Operation
Extreme Gear floats thanks to the Kutta-Joukowsky lifting theorm. It is shaped like an areofoil (like an aircraft's wing) which lifts the Gear along with it's rider as it moves forward. Most gears are fueled by air. The air is slowly lost while moving, but depletes much faster when Air Sliding, using a Speed Boost, or, when preparing for a jump.
Air can be gained in six ways:
- Pits: In races, pit areas are scattered around the track. A competitor can enter the area and refill his/her air tank, but at the possible cost of his or her place. For some gear, this is the only way to gain air.
- Tricks: If applicable, performing stunts in 'Trick Zones' will reward the rider with air along with a speed boost. The amount of air received depends on the complexity of the tricks performed, and the quality of the landing. This is not applicable if you use a gear that will not give you air when you perform tricks.
- Item Boxes: Item boxes found on the track can contain various amounts of air ranging from 30 to 100.
- Attacks: Attacking another racer will result in a small amount of air being gained.
- Leveling Up: Gaining a level (by collecting rings) will automatically refill the air tank to its current maximum.
- Abilities: If applicable, you can gain air by performing character-type abilities. The only time this is not applicable is if you use a gear that will not give you air when you perform these abilities.
Past Gear
Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy can be seen riding Extreme Gear in Sonic Advance. If you enter the special stages, you will be riding on Extreme Gear through the classical half pipe type special stages. Though the character wont be riding their original gear, Sonic is actually riding a red board with a white stripe in the middle of it, which is not even close to what the Blue Star looks like. However you do not see air pressure coming out from beneath the board, which means these boards don't have to be extreme gear as they could just be ordinary air boards.
