Fêtes de Bayonne
Encyclopedia : F : FT : FTE : Fêtes de Bayonne
The fêtes de Bayonne are a series of festivals in the Basque town of Bayonne, France, starting the first Wednesday of August. In 2004, these festivals drew 1.3 to 1.5 million visitors. They are some of the largest festivals in France. In the eighties, participants started to dress in white with a red scarf and a red belt after the colours of the city of Pamplona. Some rare purists prefer to wear blue and white, colours of the city of Bayonne.
The festivals include musical performances, and drinking, and while they are not particularly rowdy, there are problems with excess drinking, falls from ramparts or drowning in the Nive or Adour rivers.
