The FS E645 and E646 are two class of similar Italian railways electric locomotives. They were introduced in the course of the 1950s and, as 2005, they are still in service.
History
The E646 and E645 locomotives project was started in 1953, with a new model engine which was to installed over the modified chassis of the already existing six-axles locomotive E636. A similar concept for a 4-axles locomotive led in the 1960s to the E444 high-speed locomotive.
The first prototypes were delivered in October 1958. The first 37 individuals differed only for the livery: 20, for passenger traffic, in grey-green, and 17, for goods, auburn. Later, the goods-transport locomotives were renamed E645. The total number of locomotives built amounted to 295 units.
A number of locomotive of both classes is still in service with FS Trenitalia, now assigned exclusively to goods service. They will be decomissioned within 2007.
Technique
The E646 mounts 12 electric motors, each providing 360 kW, fed from 3000 V catenary. They were more powerful than those mounted on the predecessor E636, and with better adherence, improving performances up to 50%. Maximum speed is 140 km/h for the E646. The E645 had different gear rate, 21/68 instead of the 25/64, with maximum speed reduced to 110 km/h. The locomotives weigh 110 metric tons.In the 1960s the E646 locomotives were updated to permit usage in commuter passenger service.
