This trend has continued to this day with University of Melbourne having one of the longest undergraduate medical degrees.

In 1887, John Iliffe, a leading Melbourne dentist, called meetings to establish a dental hospital. The Melbourne Dental Hospital was established and the first students were admitted in 1890. In 1891 the first females trained and registered as doctors graduated from the university.
