Faulk County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 2,640. Its county seat is Faulkton6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,605 km² (1,006 mi²). 2,590 km² (1,000 mi²) of it is land and 14 km² (6 mi²) of it (0.55%) is water.

Townships

The county is divided into twenty-three townships: Arcade, Bryant, Centerville, Clark, Devoe, Ellisville, Emerson, Enterprise, Fairview, Freedom, Hillsdale, Irving, Lafoon, Myron, O'Neil, Orient, Pioneer, Saratoga, Sherman, Tamworth, Union, Wesley, and Zell; and two areas of unorganized territory: Pulaski and Southwest Faulk.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 2,640 people, 1,014 households, and 708 families residing in the county. The population density was 1/km² (3/mi²). There were 1,235 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 99.47% White, 0.08% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.04% Asian, and 0.27% from two or more races. 0.23% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 1,014 households out of which 28.90% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.40% were married couples living together, 3.40% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.10% were non-families. 29.10% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.30% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.18.

In the county, the population was spread out with 26.60% under the age of 18, 5.40% from 18 to 24, 23.10% from 25 to 44, 22.00% from 45 to 64, and 22.90% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 99.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.70 males.
