FedEx Express (airline)

Encyclopedia : F : FE : FED : FedEx Express (airline)

FedEx Express is a cargo airline based in Memphis, Tennessee, USA. It is a subsidiary of the FedEx Corporation and is the world's largest transport company delivering packages and freight to 216 countries each day. Its main sorting center and worldwide headquarters is in Memphis. Its main base is Memphis International Airport, with hubs at Fort Worth, Indianapolis, Oakland, Newark, Anchorage, Paris, and Guangzhou.

History

The airline was established in 1971 and started operations on 17 April 1973. It was founded by Frederick Smith, chairman of Federal Express Corporation (now known simply as FedEx Corporation), and began operations with 14 small aircraft from Memphis International Airport. Rapid growth followed air cargo deregulation in 1977, which allowed FedEx to use large aircraft. Following several international acquisitions, overseas operations began in 1984 with services to Europe and Asia. It has 120,000 employees (as of January 2005).

Services

FedEx Express operates the following freight services (at January 2005):

Fleet

The FedEx Express fleet consists of the following aircraft (at October 2005): Fed Ex has ordered ten Airbus A380 freighters, with options on ten more. It will be the launch airline for the Airbus A380F and plans to introduce the first aircraft to service in August 2008 for use on routes between hubs in the USA and Asia. The aircraft ordered will be delivered: three in 2008, three in 2009, three in 2010, and one in 2011. As additional aircraft arrive they will serve the Fed Ex Paris hub (ref: Airliner World, March 2005).

NASCAR Sponsorship

In 2005, Fedex took on big time sponsorship, becoming a 200mph billboard on the #11 car for 3-time championship winning team Joe Gibbs Racing. Jason Laffler piloted the car through the first 19 races, but a lack of good finshes and many crashes put him out of a ride. This year, the car sports a new look with rookie driver Denny Hamlin, who has 2 top fives and 4 top tens so far this year, plus a win at the Bud Shootout in February.
