Feebas

Encyclopedia : F : FE : FEE : Feebas

Feebas (ヒンバス Hinbasu in Japanese, Barschwa in German and Barpau in French) is a fictional character of the Pokémon franchise.

The name Feebas is a portmanteau of the words feeble and bass. Its Japanese name Hinbasu means "poor bass".

Appearance

Feebas has an appearance highly similar to that of Magikarp. It is decidedly fish-like, with tan skin flecked with darker patches of brown. Its fins are blue - it has two pectoral fins, a dorsal fin shaped like a trapezoid and one tail fin that looks frayed and tattered. Feebas has several gill slits like the lamprey, an eel-like type of fish.

Biology

Feebas is an aquatic Pokémon which can survive in both fresh and salt water thanks to its hardy nature. It prefers best ponds that are filled with weeds.

Feebas has an unattractive, shabby appearance and it looks (and is) weak and worthless, as its fins are ragged and tattered from the moment of its birth. It is hard to find, (being on six out of the 400 tiles of the lake it is found in) but it is an easy Pokémon to catch if encountered since it is slow and dimwitted, but not many people in the Pokémon world take the trouble to capture, study or raise it, as they find it a boring species. However, like another "useless" Pokémon (Magikarp) Feebas can evolve into a much more interesting Pokémon: Milotic.

In the video games

Feebas is available in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald in Route 119. It can be caught by a fishing rod, but it has a unique availability.

Route 119 has many tiles of water where a fishing rod can be used, but Feebas may be found only in 6 of them at any given time. The exact location of these tiles is random and probably impossible to determine, but it will change if the player introduces a new "trendy saying" in the Dewford Town Hall. In the tiles Feebas does appear, though, it is fairly common.

Feebas shares some similarities with Magikarp. Both are fish-like, Water-type Pokémon with so low stats so as to be almost worthless in battle but with the potential to evolve into much more powerful species (Milotic and Gyarados respectively).

Feebas is a little better off than Magikarp in that it has the potential to learn additional attacks through Technical Machines, tutoring and breeding. Feebas's low stats, however, do not make these additional attacks all that worthwhile unless they are of a disruptive nature, such as Confuse Ray, Attract, Toxic or Protect. Most people forget using Feebas in battle altogether until it evolves into Milotic.

Feebas's evolution requirements is another unique thing about it. Feebas will evolve into Milotic if its Beauty attribute is sufficiently high (170 out of a possible 255) when it goes up an experience level. Feebas's Beauty can be augmented by feeding it Pokéblocks, which are obtained by blending Berries in a Pokémon Contest Hall. Pokéblocks that enhance Beauty tend to have a Dry flavor and are Blue or Indigo in color. The best berries to use are Pamtre, Cornn, Wiki, Kelpsy, or Hondew (blended in Lilycove). A Feebas whose nature is Modest, Mild, Quiet or Rash will make the most of such Pokéblocks and evolve sooner. Conversely, Adamant, Impish, Jolly and Careful natures do not respond so well.

Feebas will not be easily captured and can only be found at six locations. Those same locations will change when the trendy saying in Dewford Town is changed by the obnoxious little boy. The Feebas are common in the tiles they are found in. Use a Good Rod once on all the tiles until a Feebas comes up. Don't use an Old Rod or a Super Rod. Old Rods mainly attract low level Tentacool and Magikarp. And Super Rods mainly attract only high level Carvannha. When you find the Feebas, catch as many as you possibly can.

When you want your Feebas to evolve into a Milotic, just teach it beautiful moves like Surf, Dive, Blizzard, etc. etc. Enter it in all the Beauty contests and try your best to win them all. While you do, blend and feed your Feebas all of the Beauty enhancing berries until it wont take any more. Then take it to the Pokemon Fan Club in Slateport City and The Fan Club man will give you a Blue Scarf hold item if he feels your Feebas is beautiful enough. Then, just keep riding along Hoenn for a while, but then get into a battle in which your Feebas will gain a level. Then, when it gains a level it will evolve into a Milotic.

Happy Hunting and Evolving...

In the anime

Feebas's first appearance was in episode #351 "Whiscash and Ash", where it "attacked" Jessie's hair while she was fishing.

Feebas made a slightly more prominent appearance in episode #355 "Pearls are a Spoink's Best Friend" where the recurring character of the Magikarp salesman hoodwinked Team Rocket into buying a Magikarp painted to look like a Feebas. The scam was exposed as soon as "Feebas" was put in water. The scam was facilitated using the true fact that Feebas evolves into Milotic.
