Feet of Flames or other wise known as "Michael Flatley's Feet of Flames" is an Irish Dance show.
History
Feet of Flames was created in 1998 by dance master Michael Flatley, of Lord of the Dance fame. First created for Flatley's last show as the "Lord of the Dance", the show was a one off event in London's Hyde Park — The Historic Route of Kings on July 25 1998. An audience of twenty-five thousand people gathered that night to witness this once in a lifetime event. The show itself is much like its predecessor, Lord of the Dance. However Feet of Flames doubles the dancers, adds new numbers, and a new stage with multi level tiers for the dancers, along with the new numbers is Flatley's solo — "Feet of Flames", which the show is based around. The show introduced some of the key elements that are now featured when Flatley performs. His silver-heeled shoes made by Freed's of London were used for the first time in this show. TV screens on both sides of the stage were also installed and now used in all the shows that feature Flatley. That night Michael Flatley stepped off the stage for what was thought to be the last time. The Hyde Park show was later distributed on VHS and DVD.
After 18 months away from the stage, Michael Flatley announced he was back — on September 21 1999. That day he announced that there was going to be a Feet of Flames world tour in 2000. The 2000 world tour was very different, the show actually changed at least 50% from the original version in 1998. The show now had new numbers, new leads, a new story line and a "whole new outlook" in the words of Flatley. The 2000 tour began on Wednesday, March 1st. 2000, in Germany. The World Tour had new leads. Both the original female leads Bernadette Flynn and Gillian Norris were replaced by Sarah Clarke and Leigh Ann McKenna. Also the role of the Dark lord was changed, first played by Daire Nolan in 1998 the role for the world tour went to Stephen Brunning. Both Daire Nolan and Gillian Norris went on to pursue their own carrers after the 1998 show. Bernadette Flynn went to go dance with Lord of the dance troupe one until 2001. Some of the characters had changed a bit in the show. Saroise the "good girl" became The Swan. Also Morrighan The temptress the "bad girl" became Cleopatra. Helen Eagan's part as the little spirit expanded into a bigger role as she became the Court Jester in the World Tour. The Highlight of the 2000 tour was Flatley and the Troupe preforming in Budapest to over 100,000 people. A true dream come true for Michael Flatley. The 2000 World Tour(Europe) concluded on July 29 2000 in Stormont Castle, Belfast, Northern Ireland.
The 2001 tour had a preview show on June 6, 2001 in the Bi-Lo Center, Greenville, South Carolina. The 2001 USA Victory tour Officially began on June 8 2001 in the AmericanAirlines Arena, Miami, Florida. The shows higlights were Michael Flatley preforming for the first time ever in Madison Square Garden in New York City on June 29 2001 to a sold out audiance. The Victory Tour finally came to an end on July 29 2001 in Dallas, Texas in the brand new American Airlines Center. Feet of Flames was the second event ever to be held at the American Airlines Center. July 29th was the last time Feet of Flames was staged. Michael Flatley was said to have retired that night but later in 2005 would come out with a new show — Celtic Tiger. It is unknown weather Feet of Flames will ever be performed again. With Flatley doing a new show and for now no one but Flatley can do the "Feet of Flames solo" it is unlikely the show will ever be held again.
VHS/DVD Releases
The Feet of Flames show from Hyde park in 1998 was put on VHS/DVD. There were talks for awhile about the 2000 and 2001 World Tour version of the show being put out on DVD. The Budapest show in 2000 was taped for an actual full show DVD release. For an unknown reason however this never happend, instead clips of the show were put on Michael Flatley's auto Biographical/Mixed Concert DVD Michael Flatley Gold. Included on the DVD are the numbers: The Court of High Kings, Firedance, Cleopatra, Thunder and Lightning, Stolen Kiss, The Duel, Victory March/Victory Dance, and the Feet of Flames solo. The show was also taped at certain venues during the 2001 Victory Tour in the USA. The Madison Square Garden show on June 29,2001 in New York City,New York as well as the American Airlines Center show on July 29,2001 in Dallas,Texas were taped. The American leg of the tour was taped for an IMAX release throughout the world sometime in 2002 and also parts of the footage was going to be used in an actual major motion picture (Movie)featuring Michael Flatley. The working title for the movie was supposedly "Dream Dancer". It was suppose to be a fictional love story. The film however was not going to be a autobiography of Michael Flatley's life, like most people thought. Clips of the rehearsal process for the movie can be found on Michael Flatley Gold. The movie itself was never completed. The 2001 actual rolls of 8mm film from the shows in supposedly tied up in ownership dispute between the filiming company and Michael Flatley's company Unicorn Entertainment.
