Encyclopedia : F : FE : FER : Fernando Pisani

Fernando Pisani (born 27 December, 1976 in Edmonton, Alberta) is a professional ice hockey winger.

Playing career

After a brief Alberta Junior Hockey League career with the St. Albert Saints, Pisani played four years for Providence College. Following his time with Providence, the Oilers signed Pisani and sent him to their AHL affiliate, then the Hamilton Bulldogs. Pisani spent parts of three seasons in Hamilton, before being called up during the 2002-03 season. He is generally considered a "late bloomer", because he didn't see his first NHL action until the age of 27.

Pisani was selected in the eighth round of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft, 195th overall, by the Edmonton Oilers. As of June 2006, his hometown club is the only NHL team that Pisani has ever played for.

Pisani performed well enough during his 2002-03 callup that he remained with the Oilers for the remainder of the season and the playoffs. Pisani made the Oilers out of training camp the next year, and wound up scoring 16 goals in 76 games. He played in both Switzerland and Italy during the 2004-05 NHL lockout.

In the 2005-06 season, Pisani scored 18 goals, but turned incredibly hot in the playoffs, scoring nine goals through the first three rounds, putting him in a tie for the goal scoring lead with Patrick Marleau of the San Jose Sharks. Pisani registered his 10th goal of the playoffs in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals before adding two more in Game 5 - the second of which came shorthanded in overtime. It was the first time in Finals history that an overtime was decided by a shorthanded goal. Pisani totalled 14 goals including the Oilers' only goal in a losing Game 7 effort, leading all scorers in the 2006 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

On July 1,2006, Pisani and the Oilers agreed on a four-year contract worth $10 million.
