Fiat 131
Encyclopedia : F : FI : FIA : Fiat 131
The Fiat 131 is a large family car built by the Italian manufacturer Fiat from 1974 to 1984. It was the replacement of the Fiat 125, available as a 2- and 4-door saloon and 5-door station wagon.
Regular 131's were also baged as Mirafiori, after the production plant in which they were produced; they had 1.3 L and 1.6 L SOHC engines. The final revisions were made in 1981, all were produced until production ceased in 1984.
From 1978 Fiat also produced an upgraded version called Supermirafiori. These featuresd DOHC engines. Diesel versions were made along with the 131 Racing.
The Fiat 131 Abarth was a very successful rally car; it won the World Rally Championship three times, in 1977, 1978 and 1980, the last one with Walter Röhrl as driver.
The Spanish twin
-->Given that up to 1982 all SEAT models were exact twins of Fiat cars, a Spanish version of this car called SEAT 131 was sold and produced in Spain, but only in 4-door bodies. The Spanish factories also produced the station wagon (called 131 Panorama) versions of the car for export purposes, although these were badged with Fiat emblems.
The Turkish twin
Tofaş industries in Turkey also based their initial production on Fiat 131s built under license. 131 based models included the Murat, the Doğan and the Kartal (station wagon). These vehicles enjoyed a very long production run and remain popular, considered widely to be "the people's car".External links
