The Japan Self-Defense Forces have been portrayed in several elements of popular culture.
Anime & manga
- The JASDF is the setting of the manga comedy 801 T.T.S. Airbats (Aozora Shojotai in Japan) as well as a loosely related prequel Eagle Driver.
- The three branches of SDF play a heavy part in the plot for the anime TV series , mostly as a corrupt, selfish organization.
- The anime and manga series The Dimensional Fleet Zipang focuses on the crew of the (fictional) JDS Mirai, a JMSDF Aegis cruiser that travels back in time to the Battle of Midway.
- The JSDF makes several appearances in the Full Metal Panic! series.
- Another anime series, Yomigaeru Sora - Rescue Wings, focuses on the Komatsu Air Rescue Squadron of the JASDF, based at Komatsu Airbase; the squadron's missions are disaster relief and Search & Rescue. In Episodes 2 and 3, the squadron mobilizes to conduct SAR and disaster relief on a Japanese island devastated by an earthquake, and is supported by JDS Haruna (DDH-141) of the JMSDF.
- The JSDF play a major role in Patlabor 2. In the beginning of the film, a slight story of a JGSDF UN contingent in Southeast Asia in the year 1999, possibly in Cambodia. The opening sequence questions on the U.N. Peacekeeping Law and whether the JSDF does have the support of the people to be deployed in UN-led peacekeeping opeartions.
- *Further in the film, the JSDF attempt a coup and deploy into Tokyo, after events lead to strife between the JSDF and the National Police Agency, in particular the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. This deployment enables the protagonist of the film to exact his revenge on those he felt abandoned him in Southeast Asia during the beginning of the film.
- Japan was placed under martial law, which was enforced by the JGSDF due to appearance of fish-like monsters in Gyo.
- The JGSDF has been portrayed in the manga First President of Japan.
- The JSSDF, or Japanese Strategic Self Defense Force, a fictional branch of the JSDF, plays a large part in the movie Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion, where the Prime Minister authorises the destruction of the EVA series and NERV.

- Plays an important role in Kenzaburo Oe's short story: Seventeen (セヴンティーン, Sevuntiin, 1961)
Movies
- The JGSDF has been involved in the Battle Royale series (Battle Royale and ), as well as with the Sengoku series (Sengoku jietai and Sengoku jietai 1549)
- Elements of the JMSDF have been involved in the production of the 2005 movie Bôkoku no îgisu.
- The JSDF has featured in a lot of movies in Toho's Godzilla Series, and the movies have also questioned the intentions and legitimacy of the JSDF and its future intentions, as well as whether Japan should regain the ability to declare hostile war.
Video games
- In the video game , there is a fictional branch of the JSDF known as the Information Self Defence Force. This group was created to protect Japan from Information Warfare attacks.
- In the video game Front Mission 3, the JDF (Japanese Defense Force) is one of the organizations involved in a sinister plot about a fictional superweapon called M.I.D.A.S.
- A JGSDF soldier was a playable character in Lethal Enforcers 3.
- Takeaki Misawa and Yorito Nagai are two playable characters as JGSDF troopers in Siren 2. They were stranded in Yamijima island.
