• Field theory (mathematics), the theory of the algebraic concept of field.
• Field theory (physics), a physical theory which employs fields in the physical sense.

There are three types of fields Electromagnetic Fields, Quantum Fields and Gravitation Fields. They all listen to the same mathematics Tensor Metric.

The field theory arose from aether theory investigations. [ The Measure of the Universe, JD North, Oxford University Press, 1965 p 25 onwards.] Einstein was pursuing what can be called classical field theorising for his unified field theory, and was taken up by his co-worker Lancelot Law Whyte.
