Figueres is the capital of the comarca of Alt Empordà, in the province of Girona, Catalonia, Spain. The Castilian form of the name is Figueras.
It is located at 39 metres above the sea, near the Pyrenees and the French border. The population was 33,157 as of 1996.
The town was the birthplace of artist Salvador Dalí, and houses the Teatre-Museu Gala Salvador Dalí, a large museum designed by Dalí himself which attracts many visitors. It was also the birthplace of Narcís Monturiol i Estarriol, inventor of the first combustion powered submarine and anaerobic engine.
