The Name

In 1996 the animal rights group, PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, requested that the town change its name, claiming it suggests cruelty to fish. The kill part in the name is actually the Dutch word for stream or creek and is common in the names of many communities in the area, such as Casperkill and Walkill which were settled by the Dutch in the early 1600s.
