Flemish bend

The Flemish Bend, also known as a Figure Eight Bend, is a knot suitable for joining two ropes of roughly similar size.
A loose figure eight knot is tied in the end of one rope. The second rope is now threaded backwards parallel to the first rope. Be sure to dress the knot neatly - the two strands should not cross each other. Although fairly reliable and reasonably easy to undo, it should not be trusted without the addition of the double overhand stopper knots each side.
For critical loads, e.g., in climbing, the knot should be backed up by tying Stopper Knots in each end around the adjacent standing end.
