Fletton

Encyclopedia : F : FL : FLE : Fletton

Fletton is an area of Peterborough in England lying in the centre of the city, to the south of the River Nene (and thus historically part of Huntingdonshire, although not part of the present district of that name). It is divided into Old Fletton, which was originally a separate town and had its own council (Old Fletton Urban District Council) prior to local reorganisation in 1974, and New Fletton, which was part of the then Soke of Peterborough. Some maps still show New Fletton (directly on the south side of the river) as well as Old Fletton (further to the south), with the boundary line between the two being Fletton Spring which rises to the west of Fletton, near to Belisize Avenue.

The area gave its name to the Fletton Brick Company and "Fletton Brick" in the 19th Century when a large area of land was auctioned off to investors. The Fletton Brick Company eventually became the London Brick company, which still exists.

Fletton is home to Peterborough United Football Club.
