Fo Tan (火炭, Jyutping: Fo2 Taan3, Pinyin: Huǒtàn; lit. fire charcoal) is a station on the KCR East Rail. It is located in the Fo Tan area of Sha Tin District, between Sha Tin and University stations.
The station was opened in 1985, two years after total electrification of the railway.
The passenger station serves some apartment buildings, some villages, a medium-sized industrial zone, as well as the headquarters of KCRC. In rush hours, some northbound trains are destined to this station and then departs to the south. However, some trains do not call this station on race days, and stop at Racecourse Station instead.
Fo Tan Goodsyard
In addition, two tracks spur off at the northeast of the station, and lead into a goodsyard north of the station. The station goodsyard is considered to be well-utilised, with freight trains stopping regularly.Platforms
- Platform 1 & 2: East Rail to Lo Wu
- Platform 3 & 4: East Rail to East Tsim Sha Tsui
Trains normally stop at platforms 1 and 4. The center track is used in these occasions:
- Special southbound departures during morning peak hours.
- For southbound stopping when there are trains heading to and from depot, or Racecourse station during race days.
- Serve as buffer so that non-stop through trains can overtake local trains.
