Focşani (/fok'ʃanʲ/) (German: Fokschan) is the capital city of Vrancea County in Romania on the shores the Milcov river. It has a population (as of 2002) of 103,219.

Geography

Focşani lies at a point of convergence for tectonic geologic faults, which raises the risk of earthquakes in the vicinity. It is one of the most popular wine-producing regions in Romania, Odobesti being just to the NW. Weisse von Fokshan is a famous local wine. and the vicinity has minerals such as iron, copper, coal, and petroleum.

History

As a town of Moldavia, Focşani developed as an important trade centre between Russia and Southeastern Europe. A congress between Russian and Ottoman diplomats took place near the city in 1772. Nearby the town, the Imperial Ottomans suffered a severe defeat at the hands of the allied forces of the Habsburgs under Prince Frederick of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld and Russia under Alexander Suvorov in 1789. There is a nice monument of Suvorov on his horse on a hill overlooking the road south to Ramnicu Sarat

In the 1850s (after the Crimean War), Focşani grew in importance as the center of activities in favour of the union between Wallachia and Moldavia (the Danubian Principalities), leading to the double election of Alexander John Cuza in Iaşi and Bucharest.

In 1917 Focşani and Galaţi were part of a line of fortifications known as the Siret Line. An armistice was signed in the city on December 9, 1917, between the Kingdom of Romania and the Central Powers during World War I.

In the Central Square, is the purple stone Unification (1858) obelisk, known as "The Carrot" People sit around it chatting and vendors sell "gogolesi" doughnuts. At Christmas it is hung spectacularily with lights.

Nowadays, the town is full of crumbling communist era tower blocks. There are a couple of small noisy discos - Vox and Electra. The traffic is pretty bad now - everyone has a relative working in the EU sending back money so that they can buy second hand Dacias as status symbols - also they are all getting too lazy to walk - although the speed of the traffic means that is now the faster option.

Piaza Moldova is the main market place where peasants sell fresh vegetables, Fish, Chickens and tasty varieties of Honey.

There are several internet cafes in Focsani, one of which, appears to be contain a vigilante who deletes other peoples postings as it seems to be their goal in life to make the internet as boring as possible. -- 19:13, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
