Foodtown (USA)
Encyclopedia : F : FO : FOO : Foodtown (USA)
Foodtown is a northeastern United States supermarket chain. Their business is centered in northern and central New Jersey, but there are other stores in the New York state suburbs of New York City and one located in Pennsylvania. In the past Foodtown used to be stronger on Long Island with more stores in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. After 1997 many Long Island stores switched over to Edwards (along with 26 former Foodtowns in New Jersey) and two stores owned by Food Parade became ShopRites.
Foodtown's corporate offices are located in Avenel, New Jersey. However, each Foodtown is independently owned, either by an individual person or a company that owns several stores, making it a cooperative, much like Shop Rite, another chain in the same area).
Like many supermarkets, Foodtown has a discount card, but theirs is different from others. Their discount card is affiliated with the S&H Greenpoints program, where every dollar spent is worth 10 Greenpoints, which you can use to buy things with (much like the old Green Stamps), or get discounts in store with a certain amount of Greenpoints.
