Football League of Ireland Cup
Encyclopedia : F : FO : FOO : Football League of Ireland Cup
The Football League of Ireland Cup is a football competition open to all Football League of Ireland clubs. Since the League of Ireland has relatively few clubs, it is not a straight knockout competition like the English League Cup from which it is named: it has a group phase for the first round. Also, some non-league sides (or county selections from counties with no league side) are invited to compete.
The competition began in 1973, replacing the earlier League of Ireland Shield. Starting with the 2005 competition, the winner of this competition receives a place in the Setanta Cup.
