Ford HSO engine

Encyclopedia : F : FO : FOR : Ford HSO engine

Ford HSO engine was an automobile engine from Ford Motor Company sold from 1985 until 1991. It was produced in Lima, Ohio, largely using tooling and designs adapted from the predecessor 200 in³ straight 6 and was a variant of the 2.3 HSC engine.

2.3

The 2.3 L (2311 cc) version was introduced in 1985 for the Ford Tempo/Mercury Topaz Sport Models (GLS/LTS/XR5). Bore is 3.7 in (93.5 mm) and stroke is 3.3 in (83.8 mm). It produced 100 hp and 135 ft·lbf (known as HSO for High Specific Output). The engine was first Central Fuel Injection (CFI) and later to MPFI.

In addition to being a more aggressive version of the 2.3 HSC, it also shared the head and cam with the 2.5 HSC (used in Ford Taurus). The main modifications to the engine were a more open head design and a more aggressive cam. Cars with HSO engines have an "S" instead of an "X" as the engine code in the VIN. The motors also sport a valve cover that says "performance" on it.
