  • In English-speaking countries, a foreign film is usually one made in a non-English-speaking country. In other countries, a "foreign film" is one made in yet another country with a different language.

In North America foreign film is often used instead of foreign language film, and may or may not be applied to British, Australian, Canadian or other films made in English. Foreign films are generally shown in art houses that also show independent films and art films, unless they are dubbed into the native language of the country for commercial reasons. Foreign films generally have only limited releases and modest grosses in subtitled or original-language-only form. The addition of subtitles may discourage less sophisticated viewers. The differences in cultural style and tone between foreign and domestic films also affects attendance. Recent examples include Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Amelie. The first foreign film to top the North American box office was Hero in the fall of 2004.
