Forensic genetics refers to the application of genetic science to legal matters.

The role of genetics in forensic science is mainly based on the analysis of DNA in criminal investigations to positively identify the perpetrator (and sometimes the victim) of a crime. DNA fingerprinting is the primary tool used in forensic genetics.
