Forest trolls are a fictional race of trolls in the Warcraft Universe.
The most notable tribes of forest trolls are the Vilebranch, Witherbark, and Shadowglen tribes. In World of Warcraft they are enemies to both the Horde and the Alliance.
History
Many thousands of years before the events of Warcraft, following the Sundering, the Forest Trolls controlled the northern portion of Lordaeron. This would put them in conflict with the High Elves who sought to build a new kingdom following their exile from Kalimdor. The High Elves founded their new kingdom of Quel'Thalas on an ancient troll city, angering the forest trolls and provoking them to attack. The High Elves, under the leadership of Dath'Remar, defeated the forest trolls, and forced them off of the new High Elven kingdom of Quel'Thalas. Following their defeat, the trolls retreated into the forests of northern Lordaeron and the High Elves placed rune stones to protect their new homeland from both the Burning Legion and the forest trolls. Defeated, but not willing to give up so easily, the trolls harbored a deep hatred of the High Elves and schemed in the forest.
Four thousand years later, the forest trolls were united and able to raise a fierce army. They brought Quel'Thalas under siege, hoping to wipe the High Elves completely off the face of Azeroth. Their ambitions, however, caused the High Elves to seek aid from the newly formed human kingdom of Arathor. The allied human and elven force proved too much for the forest trolls. They suffered a tremendous defeat and were practically wiped out as the humans hunted them down. Left scattered throughout the forests of Zul'Aman, the forest trolls would never be able to unite into a troll nation again.
Some three thousand years later, the forest trolls found themselves allying with the Orcs. The forest troll leader, Zul'jin, had been taken prisoner by human forces. After the Horde freed him, Zul'jin agreed to ally with the orcs, fearing what would happen to his people should the Horde lose. However, with the defeat of the Horde at the hands of the Lordaeron Alliance and the death of their leader, the forest trolls abandoned their former Orc allies and returned to their forest homeland.
During Warcraft III, some forest trolls worked as mercenaries. Most kept to themselves. With the coming of The Scourge, the forest trolls were forced out of their ancestral homes and into the Hinterlands.
