Fort Tejon earthquake

The Fort Tejon earthquake occurred on January 9, 1857, with an estimated magnitude of 8.0. It ruptured the San Andreas Fault for a length of 362 kilometers (225 miles), between Parkfield and San Bernardino. Displacement along the fault was 9 meters (30 feet). Though named the "'Fort Tejon earthquake,'" the epicenter of this earthquake is thought to have been located between Parkfield and Cholame, some 60 miles northwest.
Only two fatalities were recorded as a result of this earthquake, one from a collapsing adobe house in Fort Tejon.
