Frank Keaney

Encyclopedia : F : FR : FRA : Frank Keaney

Frank W. Keaney (June 5, 1886October 10, 1967) was a college men's basketball coach and known as the architect of modern "run-and-shoot" basketball. Keaney was a 1911 graduate of Bates College in Maine, where he played several sports. While coaching at University of Rhode Island (1920-48) Keaney taught an up-tempo style of basketball that employed a fast breaking offense and a full-court defense. In his 28 years at Rhode Island, Keaney never had a losing season. After retiring from coaching collegiate basketball, the Boston, Massachusetts native Keaney almost became headcoach of the Boston Celtics. Keaney's doctor, however, refused to let him take the job.
