FreakingNews is a website featuring daily free Photoshop contests based on current news items, with the emphasis on odd and political news.

Membership

FreakingNews offers a free membership to everyone who wishes to participate in photoshop contest by submitting entries and voting on entries from other members. The site has three political clans - Democrats, Republicans, and Independents - which members may join. Each of the clans has jurors, who are usually older clan members with a lot of photoshop contest experience to guide other members of their clan. Unregistered visitors may browse the photoshop contests but can not vote or submit entries or comments.

Contests

Photoshop contests are based on the current news topics chosen by the site administrators. The contests are published daily and usually allow 48 hours for submissions and voting. Members vote on a scale from 1 to 10 for each entry. The weight of each vote depends on member's voting power called karma, which is determined by member's voting habits in the past contests, and the time he/she has been a member. Jurors and administrators of the site have the highest possible karma. The rewards for winning photoshop contests are "credit points" and rankings within the site, as well as the kudos of beating other members of the group.

Community

FreakingNews offers its members several forum sections where they can discuss recent contests, learn and teach image editing techniques, and interact in discussions on recent political issues. Tutorials offer image editing techniques for new members as well as tips for making better entries for the contests. The site also hosts a member chat for discussions on more general topics.

Publicity

Since its inception in October 2003, FreakingNews was featured in many magazines, radio, and TV programs including CNN, Los Angeles Times, Salon.com, and The Sun. Several companies, including IBM, licensed FreakingNews images for their presentations and brochures.
