Freaknik

Freaknik is a meeting of (primarily African-American) college students from all over the United States occurring yearly in the city of Atlanta, Georgia. The nature of the gathering -- primarily focused on dancing, drinking, and partying -- has in recent years led city leaders to take measures to curtail Freaknik's accessibility and hence its popularity. At its peak in the mid-nineties, it drew upwards of 250,000 revelers to Atlanta. The primary complaint of Freaknik was that it brought extra criminal activity upon the city of Atlanta, the worst of which a female college student was raped in the middle of downtown Atlanta which led to the elimination of Freaknik.

Historically, Freaknik began as an affordable alternative to spending spring break at the beach, popularizing the event with low-income inner-city college students.
