Freaky Friday is a children's novel by Mary Rodgers first published in the USA in 1972, in which a teenage girl, Annabelle Andrews, and her mother Ellen Andrews switch bodies and learn to understand each other better.
It is also the name of three different movies with similar plots based on the book, made by the Walt Disney Company. The three versions are:
- 1976 Freaky Friday - film - Jodie Foster plays Annabelle and Barbara Harris plays her mother. The cause of the switch is left a mystery in this film. Rogers adds a waterskiing subplot to her screenplay. The cast includes John Astin, Ruth Buzzi, Dick Van Patten, and Charlene Tilton.
- 1995 Freaky Friday - television version - Gaby Hoffmann plays the girl and Shelley Long plays the mother. An amulet is the source of the switch, and diving replaces waterskiing as Annabelle's main hobby.
- 2003 Freaky Friday - film - Lindsay Lohan plays the girl and Jamie Lee Curtis plays the mother, with supporting roles by Mark Harmon and Rosalind Chao. In this version, a fortune cookie causes the switch, and a rock band is the girl's main hobby. The principal characters' names are changed to Anna and Tess Coleman. Actor Marc McClure, who appeared in the 1976 film as Boris, makes a cameo in the 2003 film as a deliveryman wearing a name tag reading "Boris."
The book might be considered a modern re-telling of Vice Versa, the 1882 novel by F. Anstey, in which the protagonists are a father and son.
Two sequels followed Mary Rogers' book, featuring the same characters. In the book "A Billion for Boris," Annabelle and Boris discover a TV set that tunes into future broadcasts. The book "Summer Switch" concerns Annabelle's brother and Dad, Ben and Bill, who switch bodies, leaving the youngster to negotiate Hollywood and Dad to deal with camp. A TV-version of "Summer Switch" was made in the mid-80s, starring Robert Klein.
