Frederick Stewart

Sir Frederick Harold Stewart was an Australian businessman, politician and government minister

He was born in Newcastle on 14 August 1884 and died at St Leonards on 30 June 1961. He was educated in public schools in Newcastle and worked for 20 years as an administrative officer in the NSW State Railways. He was a prominent Methodist Lay Preacher

In 1919 Stewart developed the Sydney suburb of Chullora and also owned the Metropolitan Omnibus Company that serviced the area. He als had an early interest in aviation and broadcasting. He established radio station 2CH and with Charles Kingsford-Smith established Australian National Airways.

Stewart was elected to the House of Representatives for the seat of Parramatta in 1931. He was a member of the United Australia Party. He retained the seat until 1946 and served as a minister under the Premierships of Lyons, Menzies and Fadden. He was knighted in 1935.

He was a noted philanthropist following his retirement from parliament.

Minister for Health 13 November 1939 - 14 March 1940 and 28 October 1940 - 7 October 1941

Minister for Social Services 13 November 1939 - 7 October 1941

Minister for the Navy 13 November 1939 - 14 March 1940

Minister for Supply and Development 26 January 1940 - 28 October 1940

Minister for External Affairs 28 October 1940 - 7 October 1941
