Encyclopedia : F : FR : FRE : Freedom Air
Freedom Air is the brand name of the Air New Zealand Groups low-cost airline based in Auckland, New Zealand. It operates scheduled passenger services from New Zealand to Australia and Fiji. Its crew and aircraft, both from Air New Zealand's "Zeal320" Operating Company also operate the Air New Zealand Shorthaul services, covering New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Islands. The brand's main hub is Hamilton International Airport, with secondary hubs in Palmerston North and Dunedin.
History
The airline was established in 1995 as a response to the commencement of discount services between Australia and New Zealand by Kiwi Airlines and started operations on 8 December 1995 with a single Boeing 757 aircraft. It was formed as South Pacific Air Charters by Mount Cook Airline. It is now wholly owned by Air New Zealand. By 2004, Freedom Air's fleet had expanded to five Boeing 737-300 aircraft and it was providing direct non-stop services to the Australian cities of Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney and Melbourne from their base in Hamilton as well as Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Palmerston North. Freedom briefly served on the New Zealand main trunk domestic routes such as Auckland-Christchurch, but ceased these services to concentrate fully on providing value trans-Tasman flights.

Fleet
In June 2005 Freedom Air took delivery of the first of four new Airbus A320-232 aircraft that are being leased from parent airline Air New Zealand. The new aircraft replace the company's Boeing 737-300s.
Freedom Air is currently expanding its fleet, as Air New Zealand (NZ) Airbus A320s are transferred from the NZ Air Operators Certificate (AOC) to Freedom's. The end result being that Freedom cabin crew will operate both SJ and NZ service on NZ-branded aircraft, with an estimated NZ$5Million saving for the Air New Zealand Group. Under the plan, Freedom Air will become an operating name of the newly formed Zeal320 Operating Company.
