Freelander
Encyclopedia : F : FR : FRE : Freelander
Freelander: A term for a person or group seeking political/personal freedom through emigration to and settlement of open land. The term is primarily used in a fictional or speculative sense of freelanders emigrating from earth to other bodies in the solar system. Inherent to the idea of being a freelander is the idea of being independent and self-sufficient. Freelanders are typically described as associating with like-minded individuals, but different freelander groups may be quite different from one another (i.e., libertarian vs. authoritarian, capitalist vs. communist).
Freelander: A model manufactured by the Land Rover company. A full time 4x4 on and off-road vehicle which saw the turn-around of fortunes that were eventually to save the marque. Originally Land Rover was part of the British Rover Group. It became part of BMW in the 1990s when they purchased Rover before becoming part of Ford's PAG (Premier Automotive Group). The name was coined by [Philip Cooper] during his time as Head of Trade Marks for Rover Group.
