French Louisiana

Encyclopedia : F : FR : FRE : French Louisiana

French Louisiana has two distinct references: one relative in history to United States land once owned by France; the other a modern reference to a cultural region of one U.S. state.

La Louisiane
:From 1682 it was an administrative district of New France that reached from the Gulf of Mexico northwest to the current border of Canada. France ceded the region to Spain in 1763, but regained it in 1800. However it then transferrred it to the United States by the Louisiana Purchase of 1803.
Acadiana and Greater New Orleans regions combined comprise modern French Louisiana.
:Although Cajun and Creole cultures are predominant and unique to the region, they share influences with many other Native Americans, Isleños, other settlers, former slaves and immigrants whose cultures make up the fabric of southern Louisiana. Some French Louisiana influences can also be found in adjacent cities such as Alexandria and Baton Rouge.
:Modern French Louisiana is composed of "Cajuns descended from Acadian settlers expelled out of what is now eastern Canada; black or mixed-race Creoles from the Caribbean, West Africa and elsewhere; and white Creoles largely from France. Some native people also took up French through close contact with Francophones." (The Associated Press)
