Freya Crescent

Encyclopedia : F : FR : FRE : Freya Crescent

Freya Crescent is a fictional character from the PlayStation video game Final Fantasy IX. She is Burmecian, a race of anthropomorphic rats who live in two cities, Burmecia and Cleyra.

Freya's job (or class) is Dragon Knight: she favours polearm weapons and has the ability "Jump," which enables her to leave battle for a short amount of time and finally deliver a damaging blow on enemies from above. Unlike the Dragon Knights of other Final Fantasy games (or equivalents to Dragon Knights, such as Kain Highwind, Cid Highwind, Kimahri Ronso, and possibly Cyan Garamonde whose fifth SwdTech resembles the Dragon Sword ability of the Dragon Knight in Final Fantasy V), Freya possesses a set of special skills in addition to her job's traditional ability—a common theme in Final Fantasy IX. These skills are known as "Dragon" skills, and offer a range of attack, healing, and status-changing effects. (Her ability Reis' Wind is a reference to a character in Final Fantasy Tactics. The character is an optional PC who first joins Ramza's party as a dragon-type monster, but is really a woman under the effect of a curse which can be removed.)

Freya considers herself strong willed and a mighty warrior. After her boyfriend/lover, Sir Iron-Tail Fratley, went missing, she was forced to come to terms with his disappearance. Throughout the game her eroding resolve is challenged and she is left questioning her strength, as she is consistently beaten by enemy forces far greater than her.

Freya is originally from Burmecia, but when we meet her in the game, she has not been home for years; various points in the story say three years, but on return to Burmecia, she says five. When Sir Fratley left on a mission but never returned, she left home to find out what became of him, promising never to return until she found the truth. She moved to Lindblum and lived next to the Tantalus hideout for an unknown amount of time—Zidane, who she met during this period, mentions this fact when the player encounters her in Lindblum, but does not exactly specify the timeframe. After this period in Lindblum, she headed out to wander the world.

Freya first appears in Lindblum to compete in the Festival of the Hunt. Depending on the player's actions during the hunt, Zidane, Vivi, or Freya will win. Afterwards, a wounded Burmecian soldier arrives seeking help to fend off an attack on Burmecia by an army of black mages. Zidane and Vivi join Freya to return to her home and help fight the invaders, only to find the city in ruins. While looking for the king, they find out that the attack was launched by Queen Brahne, General Beatrix, and a mysterious stranger named Kuja; they challenge Beatrix, only to be beaten by her special attack.

After their failure to defend Burmecia, Freya and the others head to Cleyra, on a hint that the king escaped there. Once there, they find the king and some of the Burmecian refugees have made it to safety. While there, Freya helps perform an ancient ceremony to strengthen the sandstorm that protects Cleyra, but something goes horribly wrong, and the Sandstorm is destroyed by some unseen magic. Left defenseless, Cleyra is besieged by Alexandrian knights and black mages who easily conquer Cleyra. When all seems lost, a strange Dragon Knight appears to dispatch a band of mages. Inside the relative safety of the cathedral, Freya is overwhelmed at the return of her lost love, Sir Fratley. Her joy is cut short when he reveals that he has lost his memory, and does not remember her at all. Freya is shattered, but when Fratley leaves again, she says nothing. During her search, she prepared herself for the worst; knowing that he's alive was relief enough, even if he had no memory of her.

While this is going on, Beatrix had snuck into the cathedral to steal a magic jewel; Freya gives chase, but the general's special attack again knocks the party out. Beatrix leaves using a teleportation spell from one of the black mages; Zidane, Freya and Vivi pursue her using other black mages, which bring them to Queen Brahne's airship, the Red Rose. From there, we see the queen using a stone called Dark Matter to summon the eidolon, Odin. Freya is left completely aghast on the deck of the Red Rose after witnessing the complete destruction of Cleyra. While on the ship, Zidane, Vivi and Freya overhear how Princess Garnet (also known as Dagger) is to be executed as a criminal, and use the teleporter pods on the ship in hopes of reaching Alexandria before this happens.

The party rescues Dagger from Zorn and Thorn, but on the way out are stopped by General Beatrix; for the third time, Beatrix beats them all with her special attack. When Beatrix realizes that they are trying to save the princess from Queen Brahne, she has a change of heart and gives Zidane the opportunity to escape. Despite her involvement in the destruction of Burmecia and Cleyra, Freya respects Beatrix's power, and joins her to fight off Zorn and Thorn's army of Bandersnatches. Steiner also stays behind, leaving Zidane, Vivi and Dagger to make their escape through Gargan Roo with the help of Zidane's friends, Marcus and Blank. Later Blank tells Vivi that Steiner, Freya and Beatrix got worked over by the Bandersnatches, and he and Marcus had to carry them out.

When she rejoins Zidane's crew at the beginning of Disc 3, Freya takes on a secondary role in terms of story: aside from a few skirmishes with Amarant, the chance of her leading the party in the Desert Palace (only if Eiko, Steiner, and Vivi, in that order, are not present), and the escape from Terra where she assumes command of the party while Zidane heads for Bran Bal, nothing of significance happens to her. There are no Freya- or Fratley-related side quests aside from finding Freya's ultimate weapon.

During the ending scenes of the game, we see Freya reunited with Sir Fratley, having returned to Burmecia to help with the reconstruction. Sir Fratley has not yet regained (and may never regain—this is not clear) his lost memories, and finds himself falling in love all over again with the woman he left behind many years ago. Like much of the rest of the game's ending, however, there is a great deal of uncertainty surrounding Freya and Fratley's reunion. The very last line of their scene together is Freya silently expressing her own doubts about their relationship's renewal. Continuing a theme, the future of Freya and Fratley is left to the player's imagination, much like the majority of her past in Burmecia, Sir Fratley's whereabouts during most of the game, and even the circumstances surrounding his amnesia, an otherwise extremely important event for both Burmecians.
