Frog (Chrono Trigger)
Encyclopedia : F : FR : FRO : Frog (Chrono Trigger)
Frog is a playable character in Squaresoft's Chrono Trigger.
Frog has one of the more enigmatic backstories in the game. He was originally a young squire named Glenn who was a good friend of the hero Cyrus of Guardia. According to the storyline, the sorcerer Magus killed Cyrus and turned Glenn into a frog on "advice" from his assistant Ozzie. Ashamed of his new form, Glenn took on the name Frog and lived the life of a hermit in a remote, evil forest. During Chrono Trigger, Frog must acquire the Masamune and the Hero's Medal to muster up the power to reconfront Magus. He joins Crono and travels to Magus's castle, eventually defeating the powerful wizard. Frog confronts Magus once again following the disaster at Zeal's Ocean Palace. If the player decides against an aggressive course of action, Magus will join the party. In certain endings, Frog's curse is removed and he turns back into a human.
In one of the side-quests near the end of the game, Frog has to go into the haunted grave of Cyrus to make peace with his spirit. In doing so, the Masamune's full power is revealed and becomes the second most potent weapon in the entire game, next to Crono's sword, Rainbow.
Frog speaks in a grandiose, archaic manner often using words such as 'thou' 'thee' and 'shalt'. Presumbably, this is because he is from the Middle Ages, however no one else in his era talks this way. Stranger still, when Frog is shown in flashbacks as Glenn he talks normally. An explanation is never given in the game but it could be that the same curse that Magus inflicted on Glenn to turn him into a frog also affected his speech. Another possibility is that Frog adapted this manner of talking as a way to cope with his transformation, perhaps thinking it made him sound more like a hero.
There is also a character named Glenn in Chrono Cross, but he is not related to Frog in any way except he bears his name.
In the original Japanese version, Frog's name was カエル (kaeru). This is a pun as this can be read both as "frog"(蛙)or the verb "to transform, to change" (変える). It should be noted that, in the Japanese version, he did not speak with the "Middle Ages Accent" that he has in the American version.
Techniques
- Slurp: "Restore ally's HP (some)" (1 MP) - Frog extends his long, froggy tongue to lick a single ally, restoring a moderate amount of HP.
- Slurp Cut: "Snag & slash enemy (single)" (2 MP) - Again using his transformed state to his advantage, Frog grabs an enemy with his sticky tongue, pulls them into close range, and delivers a powerful rising slash. Slurp Cut can target any one enemy onscreen, and inflicts slightly more damage than a regular attack. If an enemy is too large, however, he will not be able to successfully inflict damage.
- Water: "Water attack (single)" - (2 MP). The most basic Water-based spell, with which Frog ensnares one enemy in a gigantic, watery bubble and breaks it. He cannot learn this spell or any others, except Slurp and Slurp Cut, without visiting Spekkio.
- Heal: "Restore ally's HP (more)" - (2 MP). Frog uses the healing properties of Water magic to restore a substantial amount of HP to the entire party. Heal is stronger than Slurp.
- Leap Slash: "Leap-slash an enemy" - (4 MP). Jumping high into the air, Frog executes a mighty sword strike from above against one enemy. Leap Slash deals about twice the damage of a regular attack.
- Water 2: "Water attack (all)" - (8 MP). An advanced version of Water that is used to attack all enemies onscreen with an unstoppable deluge of water. It inflicts greater Water-based damage than the original spell.
- Cure 2: "Restore ally's HP (full)" - (5 MP). Identical to Marle's version, Cure 2 fully restores one ally's HP.
- Frog Squash: "Low HP = greater damage" - (15 MP) Frog summons a colossal amphibian that hops about the screen, crushing all enemies. The lower Frog's HP, the greater the damage dealt by Frog Squash.
