Frozen yogurt
Encyclopedia : F : FR : FRO : Frozen yogurt
Frozen yogurt (also frozen yoghurt, frogurt, or Fro-Yo) is a frozen dessert made from or containing yogurt or dairy analogues. Frozen yogurt is served as a low-fat or fat-free alternative to ice cream. It may or may not contain active cultures.
Typically frozen yogurt will contain low- or no-fat yogurt, sweetener, gelatin, corn syrup, coloring and flavoring. Frozen yogurt is typically made in an ice cream machine. Frozen yogurt both freezes and melts much more slowly than ice cream since yogurt has a much higher freezing and melting point than milk.
Frozen yogurt is flavored typically in the same flavors as ice cream, but since it is made with low-fat or fat-free yogurt instead of cream or milk, it has a much lower fat content. Sugar-free versions of frozen yogurt are readily available. Natural sugar-free frozen yogurt is often flavored with fructose instead of regular sugar.
Although frozen yogurt has been made since at least the 1970s, it did not become especially popular until the 1990s.
