In 1969 the Queen came to open County College. Fylde JCR President at the time reacted by dubbing his pet toad 'Archduke Albert of Lancaster'. Over-eager press coverage saw this as a scandal.
On the day that Fylde college building was to be opened in 1971 by the minister for education, students planned to demonstrate. Hence, the opening never took place.
The College, which has a reputation for being the sportiest on campus, has lost the Carter shield - the competition shield for sport - only once in 14 years.
In 2005 Fylde became the first college to be located on two separate sites, and offered on-suite residences in Alexandra Park, at the south west of the campus. Fylde will become one of the smaller Colleges at Lancaster University in 2006/7.
