The GAT-01A1 '105 Dagger' was the Earth Alliance's original mass-production mobile suit design, and was based heavily on the GAT-X105 Strike. It saw limited service in the Bloody Valentine War, as the Earth Alliance opted to mass-produce the cheaper, stripped-down version - the GAT-01 Strike Dagger - so as to be able to field more mobile suits faster.

Based heavily on the GAT-X105 Strike, the GAT-01A1 '05 Dagger' was to be the Earth Alliance's first mass-production mobile suit. Although the energy-intensive Phase Shift Armor was not included to lower power consumption and increase endurance, the 105 Daggar sported the same laminated armor as the Archangel class assault ships, providing some resistance to beam rifle fire. In addition it was fitted with EMP shielding, advanced sensors, and a Striker pack hardpoint - apart from the lack of Phase Shift, the 105 Daggar would not have been dissimilar in performance to the GAT-X105 Strike. The standard armaments were a pair of head-mounted CIWS, a pair of beam sabres, a beam rifle, a shield, and a pair of foot-mounted anti-infantry machine guns. Optionally, the beam rifle could be replaced by a 52mm machine gun.

The GAT-01 Strike Dagger was built as an early prototype, and lacked the EMP shielding, laminated armor, Striker pack hardpoint and advanced sensors of the 01A1 design. The GAT-01 was only intended for testing and was never meant for mass-production or combat, but the Earth Alliance needed to field large numbers of mobile suits quickly, so the cheaper GAT-01 was put into mass-production and would be the Earth Alliance's mainstay unit until the end of the Bloody Valentine War.

Despite this, a small number of GAT-01A1 units would be produced before the war's end. With the 'Strike Dagger' name taken, the GAT-01A1 was dubbed the '105 Dagger' to differentiate it from the GAT-01 while still retaining the link to its ancestor, the GAT-X-105 Strike (105 being the Strike's model number). A notable 105 Dagger unit was piloted by ace pilot Morgan Chevalier, equipped with the AQM/E-X04 Gunbarrel Striker pack.

In the ONA/OVA Gundam Seed C.E. 73 Stargazer, the Phantom Pain Unit also appears to have a 105Dagger, equipped with an AQM/E-X01 Aile Striker Pack. The name of the unit is not " Aile Dagger", but rather it is named as "Slaughter Dagger".

Morgan's Gunbarrel Dagger, along with a squad of seven other 105 Daggers (outfitted with Aile, Sword and Launcher Striker packs), took part in the Second Battle of Jachin Due. His unit survived engagements with a ZGMF-1017M GINN High Maneuver Type squad led by Mikhail "Doctor" Coast, the CAT1-X1/3 Hyperion Unit 1 piloted by Canard Pars and the YFX-600R GuAIZ Experimental Firearms Type, piloted by Heine Westenfluss. After the war's end, Morgan piloted his Gunbarrel Dagger against rogue Alliance ace and South American revolutionary Edward "Ed the Ripper" Harrelson. While Morgan defeated Ed by forcing his GAT-333 Raider Full Spec too deep into Earth's gravity well, he declined to take a killing shot and instead gave the "Hero of South America" the opportunity to prove himself by surviving the seemingly impossible situation.

Though after the war's end the GAT-01A1 became the Earth Alliance's mainstay mobile suit, by the beginning of the second war they had been phased out in favour of the newer GAT-02L2 Dagger L. Despite this, a number of 105 Dagger units equipped with Launcher and Jet Strikers participated in the defense of Heaven's Base in CE 74.
