GAT-X102 Duel

The GAT-X102 Duel was the first mobile suit developed under the Earth Alliance's "G Project" during the opening months of the Bloody Valentine War. On Cosmic Era 25 January 71, the Duel is stolen from Morgenroete, Inc.'s Heliopolis facility by ZAFT mobile suit pilot Yzak Joule. The Duel is the first mobile suit ever to be equipped with Phase Shift armor. Later the Duel is equipped with a 34.37 ton armor system called the Assault Shroud, which it continues to use until the end of the war.

In several early battles with the Strike piloted by Kira Yamato, the Duel is damaged severely, losing an arm in one instance and suffering a penetrating hit to the cockpit in another, that causes injury to Yzak Joule's face. In battle, the Duel proves highly effective in combat against the Alliance's hordes of mass-produced GAT-01 Strike Dagger mobile suits, and frequently racks up admirable kill counts of the suits. It also destroys the GAT-X252 Forbidden, by sacrificing the Assault Shroud as a decoy and also destroys the GAT-X370 Raider using the GAT-X103 Buster's combined Hyper-Impluse Sniper Rifle and Anti-Armor Shotgun.

GAT-01D Long Dagger/GAT-01D1 Duel Dagger

The Duel has two derivative mass-production mobile suits, the early production GAT-01D Long Dagger and mass production GAT-01D1 Duel Dagger. Both designs can be considered the Dagger form of the X102 Duel. Both Long Dagger and Duel Dagger have a heavily protected "Fortresta Mode" analogous to the Duel's Assault Shroud. The -01D was originally to be named "Duel Dagger", however the name was switched to Long Dagger following ZAFT's capture of the X102. A high-performance machine for Coordinators, Combat Coordinators and Biological CPUs in the Alliance's employ, the main purpose of the Long Dagger was to gather data for the Natural-compatible OS of the Strike Dagger, using real combat situations to provide the data. The Duel Dagger was an identical machine in all but colour, and operated by numerous noted Alliance aces.

Known Long Dagger pilots include Eleven Socius, Seven Socius, and Jean Carry with his custom white machine; Duel Dagger pilots include Edward Harrelson and Rena Imelia. One Long Dagger pilot, Seven Socius, takes part in the Second Battle of Jachin Due, but is killed in battle against the ZGMF-X13A Providence. Several other Duel Daggers also take part, but most of them are killed by ZAFT's elite Joule Team. Another One Long Dagger was tested and stolen by insane "Combat Coordinator" Eleven Socius, and another was used by Jean Carry; also known as "Glittering Star J", before he defected to the Three Ships Alliance. Two more Duel Daggers were piloted by EA ace Edward Harrelson and EA mobile suit instructor Rena Imelia.

GAT-X1022 Blu Duel

In CE 73, an improved version of the Duel, the GAT-X1022 Blu Duel, is fielded as part of the Earth Alliance's covert Phantom Pain unit ("Blu" means "Blue" in Italian.). Unlike its predecessors, Blu Duel does not include separated external armor, and instead Assault Shroud-like components are built into the mobile suit itself. The Blu Duel stores beam sabers on its legs, a beam pistol on its left forearm, and a "Stiletto" anti-armor penetrator in a compartment on its right shoulder. The right shoulder also mounts a shield and a railgun. It is assigned to the same squad as the GAT-X103AP Verde Buster and GAT-X105E Strike Noir.

Trivia

• Duel's head crest displays the text "UNO X-102", which means "One" in Italian and a reference to the GAT-X102 Duel being the first mobile suit developed under the Earth Alliance's "G Project".
• The Duel was also originally to be equipped with a powerful hyper-bazooka. However, that was stolen by Rondo Ghina Sahaku when he escaped Heilopolis with the MBF-P01 Gundam Astray Gold Frame.
