GAT-X131 Calamity Gundam

Encyclopedia : G : GA : GAT : GAT-X131 Calamity Gundam

This article is about a fictional weapon from the Cosmic Era timeline of the anime Gundam metaseries.

In mid CE 71, the Earth Alliance collaborates with Muruta Azrael's Azrael Conglomerate to build three second-generation mobile suits to counter the G-units stolen by ZAFT. These designs feature a new variation of Phase Shift armor known as "Trans-Phase". Unlike normal Phase Shift, which draws power constantly, Trans-Phase armor activates only when the mobile suit is hit, and only at the point of impact, reducing the armor's power consumption and increasing combat endurance. In addition, these three suits' pilots are designated as "Biological CPUs" (noting that the Alliance considers them equipment rather than human beings), with their abilities enhanced by drugs to match those of Coordinators.

GAT-X131 Calamity

One of these is the GAT-X131 Calamity, an artillery mobile suit, whose "Biological CPU" was Orga Sabnak. Its armament consists of two "Schlag" beam cannons on the shoulders, a "Scylla" beam cannon in the chest, dual "Kaefer Zwei" cannons on its shield, and a "Todesblock" plasma-sabot bazooka. The Calamity is first used in the conquest of neutral Orb, then sent to space and assigned to the Archangel-class assault ship Dominion under the supervision of Muruta Azrael, who is also the leader of the anti-Coordinator terrorist group Blue Cosmos. Near the end of the war, it is destroyed by Athrun Zala in the ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam.

GAT-X133 Sword Calamity

In addition, a close-combat variant of the Calamity is created, the GAT-X133 Sword Calamity. These utilize a Natural-use OS rather than "Biological CPUs", and have armament derived from that of the GAT-X105+AQM/E-X02 Sword Strike Gundam; like the Sword Strike, it uses the "Schwert Gewehr" anti-ship sword, "Midas Messer" beam boomerang, and "Panzer Eisen" rocket anchor, but it carries two of each rather than just one, and uses slightly modified versions of the weapons. It retains the Calamity Gundam's "Scylla" beam cannon, but its power output is reduced to 30% so that more power can be devoted to thrusters. Three Sword Calamities are built, with one piloted by Earth Alliance ace Edward Harrelson, and another given to Orb's Rondo Sahaku faction by Azrael. After the war, Ed Harrelson defects to the United States of South America, and the original Sword Calamity is assigned to another Earth Alliance ace, Rena Imelia, who is sent after him. Ed defeats Rena in combat, but both are badly injured. The configuration of the ZGMF-X56S/β Sword Impulse Gundam is more similar to the Sword Calamity than the Sword Strike, with its anti-ship sword and beam boomerangs doubled.
