GPE is not a single piece of software, but a complete environment of components which makes it possible to use a GNU/Linux handheld for tasks such as Personal Information Management (PIM). GPE also provides the infrastructure needed by developers; besides providing core software such as shared libraries, the GPE environment fixes standards for program interaction such as SQL, XML and other data schemas.
