The Galactic Federation of Free Alliances is a fictional government from the Star Wars novel series, more commonly called the Galactic Alliance for short. Extrinsically, "GFFA" (the acronym for the Galactic Alliance) stands for Galaxy Far, Far Away, and refers to the Star Wars galaxy as a whole. The name was coined by its first chief of state, Cal Omas, during the Yuuzhan Vong Invasion following the New Republic's decisive victory at the Battle of Ebaq.
History
Governmental changes between the New Republic and the Galactic Alliance were relatively minor, and are generally characterized by an increase in executive power and authority over the legislature.It is the successor state to the New Republic. During the Yuuzhan Vong Invasion of the Star Wars galaxy, political infighting and weak leadership led the New Republic to a great number of defeats in the war and that government would not long survive the Fall of Coruscant. Some time after the Yuuzhan Vong capture of Coruscant, it completely reorganized into the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances, or the Galactic Alliance for short, following its alliance with the Imperial Remnant and also, to an extent, with the Chiss Ascendancy, an insular civilization from the Unknown Regions on the edge of the galaxy. They retook Coruscant from Yuuzhan Vong forces at the end of the war.
With Coruscant devastated and 'Vong-formed' beyond recognition, the government of the Galactic Alliance planned to relocate to Denon, a world in the Core that had escaped bombardment and occupation by the Yuuzhan Vong. The Alliance has undertaken reconstruction efforts on Coruscant, however the planet's future is still in question. As of 140 ABY Coruscant had been fully rebuilt, albeit with a few changes such a natural plant growth (though minimal) and a new night sky due to Coruscant being in closer proximity to its sun thanks to the forced change of orbit during the Yuuzhan Vong invasion of the galaxy.
The Galactic Alliance was led by Chief of State Cal Omas and his High Council, comprised of Jedi Masters from the New Jedi Order, Alliance Senators and members of the Alliance's Military and Intelligence group. Its tactics often made use of hit-and-run strikes popularized by the Rebel Alliance during the Galactic Civil War. However, the Alliance is capable of conventional warfare, with Star Destroyers and Mon Calamari Cruisers making up a large percentage of the fleet.
The Galactic Alliance eventually moved its capital to Coruscant, the traditional seat of galactic government. The move was initially more of a public relations ploy then anything else to help foster a sense of progress following the war with the Vong. However over time the reconstruction of the planet continued and it regained its full status as the center of galactic civilization.
Many powerful races have strengthened the Galactic Alliance. The Hapes Consortium is by far the most famous of the new members. Allies include the New Jedi Order and the Imperial Remnant.

The term Galactic Alliance is also used as a shorthand to describe the coalition of every major power in the Star Wars galaxy, including the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances, the Imperial Remnant, the Chiss Ascendancy, the New Jedi Order, the Hapes Consortium, The Centrality, and others united against the Yuuzhan Vong and their Empire.
